ATYC RALLY IN 2009

The CLYC, being based in London, is a member of the Association of Thames Yacht Clubs and so I attended, as the CLYC representative, the Rally at Fawley Meadows, Henley-on-Thames over the Bank Holiday weekend. Participants arrived during Saturday 29th, mostly by motor yacht, although some, like me, came by car. We enjoyed a hog roast in the marquee on the Saturday evening, in winter conditions! I am told by the Chairman, Chris Turner, that there were 84 boats from 15 clubs on the Thames, of which 9 had entered for the boat handling competition on the Sunday morning; 170 guest were expected for dinner on Sunday evening, with about another 20 attending the prize giving.

Some of the 84 motor yachts that attended the ATYC Rally at Henley-on-Thames over the Bank Holiday weekend Being the Henley Regatta site, security was tight and the locks on the gates difficult to undo in the dark - you would have been amused to see your Commodore climbing one of the gates to leave on Saturday night (I managed to discover the knack in time for Sunday night!)
I had been welcomed by members of the RAF Watersports Centre (previously known as Danesfield Club), who had taken me under their wing last year at the rally in West India Docks, and made an Honorary Member for the weekend. All are or were serving members of the Royal Air Force and their wives.I had been welcomed by members of the RAF Watersports Centre (previously known as Danesfield Club), who had taken me under their wing last year at the rally in West India Docks, and made an Honorary Member for the weekend. Sunday morning dawned, although not clear and sunny as we had expected – in fact it was almost colder than the weather in February! Danesfield had entered 2 boats in the competition: Jedd 4, with John Orr as skipper, crewed by Bob King and Jasmine Padmore; and Pentonia, skippered by Brian Franklin, crewed by Darren Orr and Dave Padmore (Jasmine’s father). The third Danesfield boat in the fleet, although not competing this year, was Flamingo, owned by Bob and Evelyn King. Ethel Orr was one of the judges for one of the four tests. The four tests to be completed by all competitors were:
Classic mooring in still waters
Mooring adjacent to the bank
Warping the boat around
Emergency to recover a child

These were undertaken with varying levels of skill (and some differences from operating on the open sea!) and were awarded points towards the total. Prizes were awarded to individuals and special categories as well as teams. Jedd 4 was placed 5th and Pentonia 7th, but together they gained second place. The City Livery Yacht Club trophy for third place was awarded to Thames Yacht Club.

Dinner was also held in the marquee and was a jolly affair, with 1960’s music to which members danced, and the raffle and auction raised nearly £1000 towards the costs (Henley is more expensive than Kingston, where the rally will be held in 2010, and West India Docks, where it was last year and will be in 2011).
